College Lab Safety Videos

ACS College Lab Safety Video Series

This ACS video series was produced for undergraduate students in the academic chemistry lab. The videos also contain information applicable to students in high school labs. Learn about the elements of safety and the importance of the safety mindset in the chemistry lab. A playlist of these undergrad safety videos is also available to watch on YouTube.

From Chemical Safety Rules to Risk Management | ACS College Safety Video #1

This video introduces the chemical risk management system known as RAMP, which stands for Recognize hazards, Assess risks, Minimize risks, and Prepare for emergencies. The video concludes with a section about positive safety culture. This is the first of six ACS videos designed for use in an introductory college chemistry course.

Chemical Safety Information Resources | ACS College Safety Video #2

This video presents a discussion of the seven sections in a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) that are most directly related to recognizing chemical hazards in the laboratory. A brief consideration of the limitations of SDSs is included. PubChem and the NFPA fire diamond are also discussed as they help in finding authoritative hazard information.  This is the second of six ACS videos designed for use in an introductory college chemistry course.

Assessing Risks in the Chemistry Laboratory | ACS College Safety Video #3

This video defines “hazard” and “risk,” and explains methods for assessing risks from hazards. Complications in this risk assessment process are also considered, as is the concept of a “risk equation.” This is the third of six ACS videos designed for use in an introductory college chemistry course.

Minimizing Risks in the Chemistry Laboratory | ACS College Safety Video #4

This video presents an overview of applying risk minimization using the NIOSH Hierarchy of Controls to reduce risks most effectively. In order, the NIOSH hierarchy includes: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment. This is the fourth of six ACS videos designed for use in an introductory college chemistry course.

Minimizing Risks in the Chemistry Laboratory: Techniques | ACS College Safety Video #5

This video presents various risk minimization techniques as applied to titrations and chemical synthesis. The importance of laboratory practices, such as housekeeping and proper waste disposal in preventing incidents, is emphasized. This is the fifth of six ACS videos designed for use in an introductory college chemistry course.

Emergencies in the Chemistry Laboratory | ACS College Safety Video #6

This video reviews best practices for responding to laboratory incidents such as handling broken glass, cleaning up spills, and responding to fires.  The fire triangle is explained as a prelude to understanding ABC extinguishers and use of the PASS system.  This is the sixth of six ACS videos designed for use in an introductory college chemistry course.
